Will is a young boy who doesn’t really like school and all the rules he has to follow, even though he has a very funny teacher called Mr. Boo. Mr Boo is actually a panda! A new girl starts in his school, and she shows Will all the fun things about his daily school life in Mr Boo’s class. Will realises that his school is cooler than he thought even though there are some rules to follow.

Aim of Activity

10 - 15 minutes

To check understanding of the animation.

Steps for Students

  1. Listen to the teacher and look at the pictures ACTIVITY 1
  2. Are the sentences true or false?
  3. If a sentence is false, what is the correct answer?

Students can answer the questions by:

  • saying ‘TRUE’ or ‘FALSE’
  • standing up if it’s TRUE and sit down if it’s FALSE
  • moving left if it’s TRUE and right if it’s FALSE

For online classes the Teacher can use the emoji function to correct

This activity could be done before the video is played or as a follow up activity.

  5. FALSE – Will goes to school by bus ( Does he drive the bus???)
  6. FALSE – Will doesn’t like school because he thinks it isn’t cool and there are too many rules.
  7. TRUE – a group of fish is called a ‘school’ in English!
  8. TRUE – but their teacher thinks they should obey him like robots!
  9. TRUE – Mr Boo (Boosty) is a good dancer! (Is he a good teacher????)
  10. TRUE – Cool School is a funny school!

Aim of Activity

10 - 15 minutes

To provide learners with a controlled practice of ‘Can you? Yes, I can/ No, I can’t’

Steps for Students

  1. Interview your partner and give them time to circle and choose their answer.
  2. Next, answer your partner’s questions and choose your answer.
  3. Share with your class/teacher what your partner can/can’t do.
  1. Print out the worksheet or display on the Interactive Board
  2. Group children into pairs and ask then to read out the question to their partner.
  3. Tell them to circle the answer.
  4. After they can present information about their partner to the class.

 

TIP! 

  • Listen for correct pronunciation of target language.
  • Are they using correct question forms?

Aim of Activity

10 - 15 minutes

To develop spoken interaction skills through a listening + pronunciation.

Steps for Students

  1. Listen to the song.
  2. Sing along to song with actions.
  3. Can you think of any other words with ‘oo’ sounds?
  4. Watch the animation again for these sounds.

Listen to the song and learn the words and sounds.

Face-to-face class:

  • You’ll need a projector to do the task as a whole class activity.
  • Or tablets for groups of learners to do the task in groups.

Online lesson:

  • Share the task online

  1. Read the words and help the students to understand the meaning through gestures and facial expressions.
  2. Ask the students to read with you.
  3. Play the song for them to listen to.
  4. Play again and encourage them to sing along.
  5. Try to sing again.
  6. If students have access to a recording device they can record each other and listen back. This online site for recording works well too Vocaroo | Online voice recorder

 

TIP!

After teaching the online song, go back and watch the animation again to see if students have developed and awareness of these sounds (listening) and can pronounce them better (speaking).

Aim of Activity

To connect topic to real life experience and teach vocabulary via a game format.

Steps for Students

  1. Watch the video and try to guess the objects as they are revealed! : ACTIVITY 4
  2. Whisper the answer to your team leader.
  3. Your teacher will tell you which team is the winner.

  1. Put class into Teams
  2. Play the Quiz.
  3. Pause the screen if they need more time.
  4. Ask the Teams for their answer.
  5. Make a note of the score ( write down the score)

TIP!

  • Video could be used with two teams with the winning team having the most correct answers.
  • Pause the video and elicit the answer ‘what is it?’
  • For lower-level classes the Teacher can use realia (real classroom objects) to pre-teach the vocabulary before playing the game.

Steps for Students

  1. Write or draw the rules in your school or post them here: ACTIVITY 5
  2. Ask your teacher for any new words.
  3. Present your results to your class.
  4. What are the rules in other schools?
  1. Pre teach verbs/endings that match rules in your school:
    For example:
    We can/ We can’t + learn new things/dance/listen/shout/stand up/eat in class/drink in class/speak English/draw…
  2. Ask the students to use the worksheet or padlet to record ideas for your school: ACTIVITY 5
    In padlet:
    Click on plus sign.
    Enter your school name.
    Upload a picture of your school.
    Write what you can or can’t do.
  3. Encourage them to find out the rules for other schools.
